At an enormous 750mm long, this is no ordinary Tamiya truck. Based on Volvo’s flagship FH16 heavy-duty platform, the model recreates the type of specialist recovery vehicle designed for towing large commercial vehicles and tractor units.

The combination of four axles, twin front-axle steering, twin driven rear axles, a working 3-speed transmission and optional powered recovery equipment makes this one of the most technically interesting trucks in Tamiya’s 1/14 range.

Massive Volvo FH16 Recovery Truck

The full-size Volvo FH16 is one of the most powerful heavy commercial vehicles on the road, with the flagship version using a 16.1-litre turbocharged inline-six engine producing 750hp.

Tamiya’s model captures the imposing appearance of the FH16 with a highly detailed moulded cab, complete with a photo-etched front grille and detailed interior components.

Behind the cab sits the enormous recovery body and towing equipment that gives this model its unmistakable heavy-recovery appearance.

Twin Front-Axle Steering

One of the standout engineering features is its twin steering front axles.

This was the first twin-steering arrangement used in Tamiya’s 1/14 scale truck series and gives the huge 750mm-long truck both impressive scale accuracy and realistic steering operation.

Combined with the two driven rear axles, this creates the truck’s imposing 8×4 configuration.

Installing the actuator system allows the recovery mechanisms to be controlled using your RC transmitter, adding an entirely different dimension to the normal Tamiya truck driving experience.

Rather than simply pulling a semi-trailer, the Volvo can be equipped to perform realistic scale recovery operations.

Heavy-Duty Ladder-Frame Chassis

Supporting the enormous body is a substantial ladder-frame chassis featuring aluminium side channels and resin cross members.

Power from the front-mounted motor is transferred by propeller shaft to the two driven rear axles.

Each rear axle features its own differential, allowing smoother cornering while maintaining the realistic heavy-duty drivetrain layout.

Realistic Suspension

The Volvo FH16 uses Tamiya’s proven scale truck suspension design with:

• Metal leaf springs
• Friction dampers
• Float-mounted die-cast front axles
• Reinforced resin rear axles

Numerous metal components are used throughout the model to provide additional strength and durability.

Working 3-Speed Transmission

The truck features Tamiya’s mechanical 3-speed transmission, with gear selection controllable remotely using suitable radio equipment.

Important: When the truck is actually towing another vehicle, Tamiya specifies that only one gear should be used.

Add Lights, Sound & Vibration

The Volvo is compatible with the separately available:

The MFC-03 can add realistic engine and truck sounds, lighting and vibration effects.

The headlights and taillights can also be illuminated using compatible separately available Tamiya LEDs.
