Kyosho Mini-Z Buyer’s Guide: Which Mini-Z Is Right for You?
Kyosho Mini-Z cars are tiny – around 1:27 scale – but they are proper hobby-grade RC cars, with proportional controls, adjustable suspension and a huge range of tuning parts. You can race one round the kitchen, set up a carpet track in the living room, or join a club. The tricky part is choosing: Mini-Z comes in several chassis, and parts don’t swap between them. This guide explains the differences in plain English.
The quick answer
- Want to race? Get a Mini-Z MR-04 (rear-wheel drive).
- Want the easiest car to drive? Get a Mini-Z AWD (four-wheel drive).
- Want to crawl over obstacles? Get a Mini-Z 4×4.
- Buying for a young child? Get a First Mini-Z.
Mini-Z MR-04 and MR-03 – rear-wheel drive
The RWD cars are the original Mini-Z racers and still the most popular. Driving only the rear wheels makes them precise and rewarding once you get the hang of throttle control. The MR-04 is the current model: smoother, easier to set up and, on many Ready Sets, fitted with a gyro that helps keep the car straight. The MR-03 is the previous generation and still a great car, with plenty of bodies and parts available.

You’ll see codes like W-MM, N-RM or W-LM in the names. These describe the wheel width (N = narrow, W = wide) and the motor position and wheelbase (MM = mid-motor, RM = rear-motor, LM = Le Mans/long). They matter when you buy bodies and tyres, so make a note of yours.

Mini-Z AWD – four-wheel drive
The Mini-Z AWD (MA-020 chassis) drives all four wheels, which gives it lots of grip and makes it very forgiving on shiny or dusty floors. It’s the best choice for beginners who still want a “proper” Mini-Z, and it suits rally and touring-car bodies like the Subaru Impreza, Toyota GR Yaris and Nissan Skyline.
Mini-Z 4×4 – mini scale crawler
The Mini-Z 4×4 (MX-01) is a completely different car: a slow, detailed trail truck with oil-filled shocks and lots of suspension movement. It’s great fun building courses out of books, cushions and rocks. Bodies include the Suzuki Jimny, Jeep Wrangler, Toyota 4Runner and Land Rover Defender.
Mini-Z Buggy – off-road
The Mini-Z Buggy (MB-010) is a 4WD off-road buggy for carpet, astro turf and small dirt tracks. It shares some parts with the AWD.
First Mini-Z – the gift option
First Mini-Z is a simplified 1:28 car aimed at younger drivers, with a slower training mode and AA batteries. It’s tough, cheap to run and makes a brilliant Christmas present – but it isn’t designed for upgrading like the other Mini-Z cars.
What you’ll need to run a Mini-Z Ready Set
- 8 × AAA batteries – 4 for the car and 4 for the transmitter. Rechargeable NiMH AAA cells save money if you drive a lot.
- A charger, such as the Kyosho Speed House USB charger.
- Optional: spare tyres. Tyres make the biggest difference to how a Mini-Z drives on your floor.

Spares and upgrades
Because Mini-Z parts are chassis-specific, we’ve grouped our spares by chassis – start from the Mini-Z spares section or use our RC car spares finder. Tyres, motors and bodies are the most popular upgrades.
