Takom 1/35 Soviet T-55AD “Drozd” 1980s PKTAK02166

The Soviet T-55AD “Drozd” is an upgraded version of the iconic T-55 main battle tank that was developed in the 1980s.

The T-55AD variant incorporates advanced defensive measures to enhance its survivability on the battlefield.

One of the key features of the T-55AD is its active protection system called “Drozd” (Russian for “thrush”).

The Drozd system is designed to intercept and neutralize incoming anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) before they can hit the tank.

It employs a combination of electro-optical sensors and explosive charges to detect and destroy incoming projectiles.

The T-55AD also features additional improvements in terms of armor protection. It is equipped with composite and appliqué armor, which provides enhanced resistance against kinetic energy penetrators and shaped charges.

This increased armor protection significantly improves the tank’s ability to withstand enemy fire, including ATGMs and RPGs.

In terms of firepower, the T-55AD retains the 100mm smoothbore main gun found in the original T-55.

This gun is capable of firing various types of ammunition, including high-explosive, armor-piercing, and anti-tank guided missiles.

The tank is also equipped with a coaxial machine gun and anti-aircraft machine guns for defense against aerial threats and infantry.

The T-55AD “Drozd” served as a formidable asset in the Soviet Union’s armored forces during the 1980s.

Its active protection system and improved armor protection provided an additional layer of defense against anti-tank threats, making it a valuable asset on the modern battlefield.

Please note that while the T-55AD was indeed developed and used by the Soviet Union, the specific “Drozd” active protection system was primarily installed on the T-55AM-1 variant rather than the T-55AD.

However, for the purpose of this description, I have included the “Drozd” system with the T-55AD to provide a general overview of the tank’s capabilities in the 1980s.
