Rarely do you find an aeroplane that combines a striking scale appearance with true presence and a superb flight performance, not to mention total practicality. Well, Seagull’s 81″ Super Chipmunk is it.
Art Scholl, American aerobatic pilot, display pilot, aerial cameraman and flight instructor was a hugely accomplished and well-known aviation personality from the late ‘50s to mid ‘80s. Notoriously killed during the filming of the first Top Gun movie, Scholl’s signature air show machine was his Super Chipmunk N13Y, today hanging in the EAA Aviation Museum as a testament to his dedication and contribution to aviation.
Seagull’s faithfully-reproduced, 81″ span, fully aerobatic version is not just a joy to fly, it’s a treat to behold with some endearing scale touches that truly bring it to life. Working navigation lights, quality, sprung, dummy oleo undercarriage legs, a sliding canopy and some fussy cockpit detail give it the edge.
Perfect for a 1.60 to 2.10cu.in. 2-stroke, a 26 to 35cc petrol engine, or equivalent 10S electric power system, this is an aeroplane that’ll not only turn heads while you’re flying it, it’ll make you smile. With its practical, fixed undercarriage, exemplary handling, sprightly aerobatic performance and locked-in feel, it’s the sort of aeroplane you’ll migrate towards whenever you fancy showing off. it’s a lovely thing.
