Description
The US kept the M4A3E8 “Easy Eight” in service after WWII, using either a 76 mm gun or a 105 mm M4 howitzer.
During the Korean War, the Sherman was seen alongside the M26 Pershing and M46 Patton as a typical American tank.
The M4A3(76)W HVSS Sherman and T-34-85 were equivalent and could destroy each other at typical combat ranges, while the Sherman had an advantage because of the Sherman’s use of High Velocity Armor Piercing ammunition, sophisticated optics, and greater crew training.
Between July and November 1950, the M4A3(76)W HVSS Sherman destroyed 41 enemy tanks with 76 mm HVAP ammo.
Due to the M4’s mechanical durability, ease of maintenance, and driveability compared to the M26 tank, the M4A3(76)W HVSS tank became the chosen US tank in the later stages of the Korean War.
In 1957, the M4 was phased out in favour of the M48 Patton and M60 Patton by the US Army.
The United States continued to transfer Shermans to its allies, resulting in their widespread usage abroad.
