As part of the Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II, the US Army Rangers played a crucial role in the assault on Pointe du Hoc on June 6, 1944, known as D-Day.
The US Rangers were tasked with scaling the steep cliffs of Pointe du Hoc to neutralize German artillery positions that threatened the success of the landing.
To aid in their ascent, the Rangers utilized LC(A) (Landing Craft Assault) vessels equipped with specially designed grappling hooks.
These grappling hooks were an innovative solution to overcome the formidable natural obstacles presented by the cliffs at Pointe du Hoc.
The LC(A) vessels approached the cliffs under heavy enemy fire, and the Rangers skillfully deployed the grappling hooks to secure them to the sheer rock face.
